Grant & Stone tops BMJ Index

Grant & Stone has topped the BMJ Index for 2010, according to the January issue of Builders Merchants Journal

The Buckinghamshire-based NBG LLP partner achieved an index rank of 714, ahead of AW Lumb at 689 and Nottingham's John A Stephens at 351.

The BMJ Index score is arrived at by multiplying the three most important ratios for a merchant - year-on-year sales growth, stockturn and operating margin. All figures are based on the latest filed accounts.

Huws Gray, which has topped the table in the last few years, came in at number 4 with a rating of 228.

The highest rank achieved by one of the national merchant chains was BSS at 7 with 19, closely followed by Grafton Merchanting GB at 8 with 17. Wolseley UK ranked 31 with -216 and Travis Perkins managed just 38th place at -425.
