Stan Boardman took to the greens along with national builders’ merchants and suppliers at the National Buying Group’s inaugural golf day at the Belfry, Birmingham recently.
The event, sponsored by Quinn, Bradstone, Charcon and LaFarge Pasterboard, was a resounding success and brought together a host of the construction industry’s finest manufacturers and suppliers such as Brett Landscaping, Polypipe, Kellaway, Superglass, Collier & Catchpole and Rowlinson Timber to relax and network in an informal environment
Teams of those from across the industry competed on the Belfry’s world-famous 18-hole Brabazon golf course in competitions such as Nearest the Pin, Longest Drive, Longest Putt, 1st Place Team and Overall Winner.
A later cheque presentation and charity auction saw the NBG’s previous fundraising efforts topped up to more than £10,000 for their supported charity, Ronald McDonald House Charities.
The day of golf brought with it a number of amusing anecdotes, which saw Stan’s teammate, Peter Wathell from Keystone, duly awarded the Cad Award (most unseemingly behaviour) after his firing shot resulted in a dead duck floating on a Belfry pond at the 8th hole
Fun on the course was followed by a superb evening of dinner and entertainment, with the tale of the not-so-lucky ducky ensuring Stan was not short of material for his hilarious stand-up performance.
Allan Durning, NBG Executive Chairman and Commercial Director, accompanied the sponsors and Stan to present the winners with their trophies, which saw Ben Davies from Sika scoop 1st Place and Neil Harbidge from James Wilby win Longest Drive on both the 1st and 15th holes.
Tom Terry from Expamet also won the Poulter Award (best dressed) for wearing the traditional plus fours and Donald Scott, Mark Davies, Simon Woods and Graeme Miller received the Award for 1st Place Team with a combined total of 87 points.
Allan commented: “The event was a complete success thanks to our sponsors, members and all those who attended. We plan to make this an annual occurrence and hope to see similar support at the 2009 NBG Golf Day.”
He added: “Next year’s event will be even more special as we have plans to introduce a Dead Duck Award, dedicated to Peter Wathell
After the awards, Joanne Hodges, Head of Fundraising at Ronald McDonald House Charities was presented with a cheque of £8,600, and was thrilled to see this topped up to more than £10,000 by generous bidders during the charity auction.
Joanne said: “RMHC is delighted with the fantastic support that the National Buying Group has given to our new Ronald McDonald House at Birmingham Children's Hospital and we are looking forward to working with them to build our 60 bed house for families to stay in whilst their children are receiving treatment
The funds raised from the charity auction and cheque presentation will go towards the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham, a 60 bedroom house for families whose children are being treated at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
